Formula 1 has locked in its future! The sport, along with the FIA and all eleven teams, has officially signed a new Concorde Agreement. This crucial deal sets the rules for Formula 1 from the start of the 2026 season all the way through 2030.
This agreement is essentially the backbone of how F1 operates, outlining everything from commercial aspects like prize money to the governance that shapes the sport's future. The previous agreement expired at the end of the 2025 season, making this new deal vital for stability.
In March, F1 announced that the commercial side of the agreement, including financial aspects like anti-dilution fees, had been agreed upon with the teams. But here's where it gets controversial... the governance side took longer, with discussions involving F1, the FIA, and even newcomer Cadillac, who's set to join in 2026.
Both F1 and the FIA released statements confirming the agreement's completion. But what exactly is in this all-important document? Unfortunately, the details are kept under wraps due to strict confidentiality agreements. However, we know that it's a critical framework for the sport's operations.
The governance aspects are particularly important. They dictate the relationship between the FIA, the teams, and F1 itself. This includes how rule changes are voted on and the overall direction of the sport.
And this is the part most people miss... FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem was pushing for greater financial support from F1. He felt the FIA wasn't getting a fair deal, wanting more resources to improve race direction and stewarding. This is an area the FIA has been working on after facing criticism in recent years.
The FIA stated that the new Concorde Agreement will allow them to invest in better race regulation, direction, and technical expertise. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown mentioned that the commercial terms were finalized quietly, and he didn't expect major changes in governance. Then-Red Bull team principal Christian Horner noted that governance was mainly an issue between the commercial rights holder and the FIA.
